Hey. I'm one of the three owners of Tel'Laerad. I'm 19, a Computer Science student who has finished their first year of university, and British.

If you want to contact me, and it isn't something that'd be best going to the main staff so it doesn't rely on me being around to handle it, you're probably better doing so over IRC, so we can have a real conversation. You can also mail me at namegduf@tellaerad.net, if you prefer.

About Myself

Likes... I like to code, I like to script, I like to set things up, make them go, and make sure they stay that way. I like to think I'm not bad at it. I like a good job, and hate a half-assed thing. And I like good standards, dislike the need to follow poor ones, and take a practical view of approaches to programming, of which I favour procedural programming in general.

How I spend my time... I'm never short of things to do, always busy. If I'm not busy, I always make myself busy. Life is never dull. Working on Tel'Laerad or one of the other networks I oper, working on Iris, always something, usually at least one thing per area. And yet, I hang around enough to come up with interesting (not always useful) ideas, talk on IRC, and do whatever else needs doing.

Philosophy... I'm a fallibilist first, agnostic and moral relativist second. That means firstly that I think everything I know could be wrong, including that. Secondly, that I have no faith in any particular creation scenario or the existence of any deities, although I think the benevolent, omnipotent, omniscient deity scenario seems unlikely from events in the world. Thirdly, I don't think there is any universal laws defining things that are 'right' and things that are 'wrong' and forcing people to use those definitions, although I think there are social standards. Oddly, I find this to not conflict with holding to my chosen ethics in the slightest.

Current Status

As I said, I'm one of the three owners of this place. My specific responsibility is to organise everything and keep the staff running smoothly, and my immediate job is basically whatever is most important that someone else isn't already doing. With many tasks not yet delegated to anyone else, we top guys are busy people.

I'm also an operator on Caelestia, where I used to provide and maintain a server. Feel free to visit; substantial parts of Tel'Laerad grew from their community.

Away from purely virtual matters, I also recently completed my first year at the University of Bath, on a Computer Science degree.

Skills

Languages

  • C, and basic usage of C++.
  • Java
  • JavaScript
  • Python
  • PHP

I've a limited degree of usage of Perl, but it isn't a language I use often, mostly when a combination of existing CPAN modules can meet my requirements.

I've historically used TCL once, adding functionality to a game bot written as a TCL script for an eggdrop, and was rather skilled at mIRC script, but lack of use has made me forget most of both; they aren't things I use nowadays.

I used to do a lot of interesting work in Oblivion mod script, created the Quest Award Leveling mod and a mod fixing the Hermaeus Mora daedric quest bug. Working on the first, I worked out a linked list implementation to create a modular mod, to allow people to add in extra modules for Oblivion expansions and mods, without requiring a separate version of the entire mod for just their configuration, but lost that version of the mod in a HDD failure, and never resumed work. I've not played the game in over a year.

Music Interests

My tastes are interesting, although many around the network claim the same. I can't say I've heard enough to make any broad statements about what I like... most I can say is that I enjoy Blue Oyster Cult, Dragonforce, Flobots, Queen, Sonata Arctica, and some Dark Moor, Disturbed, KFMDM, Pillar, and Prodigy.
