The Pin of Duplicate Transfiguration is a complex and dangerous item, which has led to many deaths and even more monsters. It is suspected that more than one exists, as records of various inquisitions destroying it exist on multiple worlds.
Appearance
The Pin is just that- a small pin of brass in the shape of an eye, with the pupil taking the form of a minuscule diamond of the first water. This eye is flat, and on the back is the requisite tin pin, which is a simple straight-pin, with no fastener.
Powers
In order to take effect, the Pin must be charged. To do this, the diamond is touched to the skin or bone of a dead creature, man or beast. The jewel absorbs the memories and shape the creature was charged with, and becomes a sapphire. After this point, the pin may be inserted into the flesh of another creature, to which it will adhere for several seconds, glowing an azure hue. After this, the pin falls out, decorated with a diamond once more, and the person stricken with it is polymorphed into the shape absorbed, along with the instincts and strong emotions taken from it. The memories absorbed from the corpse seem to be lost in transition.
History
As may seem obvious, this pin(s) has caused a great deal of trauma and intrigue, used sometimes as a weapon to 'remove' a rival by trapping them in the form of a peasant or beast (usually followed by slaying the 'monster'), or by power-seekers who have used it to, for example, take on the shape of a dire bear, only to be driven mad by conflicting brain patterns and irreconcilable emotions.
In one odd case, it also caused the death of a lady who attempted to apply it by plunging it into her own forehead, at which point the spell did not take hold, and she died.
