Suffice to say that the time for words and level-headedness had long since passed. We set upon the Earth in a frenzy of axe and sinew, neglecting even the most simple supports in our zeal.
And then, on that fateful day, the first axe broke through the rock and into darkness...

Eat
...sockets empty, not a scale remaining. Like some behemoth, it made the air tremble as it passed. The nearest miner vanished in an instant when it opened that jaw, flesh sizzling off blackened muscle as the glowing hell of the demon's gorge was loosed...
Fear
...warning, for though I have fled from town to town, I know it follows me. When the sun sets, I can see it in the distance, searching. A red glow on the horizon. I know that some night I shall wake to see two great black sockets and ribs full of fire, and that shall be the end of me. I write this now, as a lesson to those who will come; do not dig too deep.
